Lands End to John O'Groats

An unexpectedly pleasant start to the day. I had planned on giving my legs a bit of a rest today, whilst I have not covered a vast mileage over the last couple of days, it is the first mileage covered since October. The weather this morning was not great, it was misty, raining and quite uninviting. However once I got out and got my legs moving It felt quite good, I just followed my front wheel, not set plan as to where I was going but just knowing that I wanted to be at work for 7 ish. Considering the weather, the traffic the wet roads and the number of junctions I’m really quite happy with the outing.

NO! you can call me anything you want but never a workaholic - I had a meeting this morning at 7.45 I needed to get to work, have my usual high carb coffee, have a shower, get another coffee then arrive ready to chat. Work starts at 8.20 and ends at 2.45.

The Motivation

It you have found your way to here you must already know that I am going to try and ride from Lands End to John O'Groats. There is also, I guess, a good chance that you already know that I am riding to raise money for Christies. What you probably will not know is exactly why I am doing it, well let me explain.

The initial motivation to take on a sizable physical challenge stemmed from seeing Eddie Izzard complete his epic run around the country last year. Not having the luxury of being able to spend two months away from work and family I looked for a more condensed challenge, having recently discovered the joy that is cycling the Lands End to John O'Groats route seemed an obvious choice. Ideally I could have done with having more than 1 week to complete it, but that I suppose just makes it more of a challenge.

Why raise money for Christies. I think it would be fair to say that everybody has in some way been affected by cancer. During the last few years several students and ex students of Audenshaw have been forced to battle with various forms of the disease, whilst a couple have come through it, there are some that were not so fortunate. I am riding to raise money in the hope that research into 'young peoples' cancer might prevent somebody’s parents from having to suffer the unimaginable heartbreak of losing a child.

Please give me your moral support and the cause your financial support.

The Route

The route I have chosen has been very much determined by accomodation. Start to finish is a touch over 900 miles (assuming I do not get lost on route) This will have to be covered in seven days. The details of the route are as follow:

Day 1 29th May

Lands End to Exeter 125 miles

Day 2 30th May

Exeter to Cirencester 115 miles

Day 3 31st May

Cirencester to Worksop 135 miles

Day 4 1st June

Worksop to Newcastle 135 miles

Day 5 2nd June

Newcastle to Dunfremline 130 miles

Day 6 3rd June

Dunfermline to Inverness 140 miles

Day 7 4th June

Inverness to John O'Groats 120 miles

Total 900 miles.
